Brown & Brown, Scottish Modern

A new book, Scottish Modern, has been launched by award-winning architects Andrew Brown and Kate Brown, founders of Brown & Brown. The publication offers an in-depth exploration of the studio’s distinctive approach to contemporary home design, rooted in the landscapes and built traditions of Scotland while embracing modernist clarity, craft and innovation.

Established in Royal Deeside in 2010, the practice has developed a reputation for creating individual, highly contextual homes that respond sensitively to both client aspirations and the character of their surroundings. Their work has drawn national and international recognition, including Architecture Practice of the Year at the Scottish Design Awards in 2022.

At the heart of the book is the concept of “Scottish Modern”, a term that reflects the studio’s fusion of rigorous Scottish building traditions with a contemporary architectural language defined by light, line and carefully curated natural materials. Rather than following established trends, the practice champions originality and a deep engagement with place, inspired by pioneers such as Morris and Steedman, Peter Womersley and Alan Reiach, while consciously moving beyond theories such as Kenneth Frampton’s Critical Regionalism.
