Seoul Metropolitan City is holding ‘Young Architects’ Competition 2016: Parking Lot Cultural Space Creation’ to provide design participation chance for domestic and international young architects to promote architecture service industry and discover and nurture outstanding designers. In order to extend participation of rising architects, only architects under the age of 45 (who was born after Jan 1, 1971) can enter this design competition.

Blank Space has announced three winners and ten honorable mentions in their third Fairy Tales Competition. This year's contest drew entries from more than 1,500 participants from 67 countries. Everyone from students to academics and notable studios and designers submitted detailed stories and beautiful visuals for their submissions. The winners were chosen by an interdisciplinary jury of distinguished judges including Hans-Ulrich Obrist, Co-Director of the Serpentine Galleries; Elizabeth Diller, founding partner at Diller Scofidio + Renfro, and ArchDaily’s own Becky Quintal, Executive Editor; and David Basulto, Founder and Editor in Chief.

The Challenge

How do you reinvent an architectural icon for the 21st century? How can you inspire people to see potential in a structure that has been off limits for decades? And how do you activate a public space in a way that is sustainable for future generations?

The aim of this International Competition is to design a new Circus School in Moscow to serve as an academy for aspiring circus performers. The architecture of this new building should reflect contemporary design tendencies. The proposal must not only attend to the specific function but also take into consideration the urban context and impact.

SO/AP Architectes has released its proposal for the Tokyo Pop Lab competition, which recently announced its winners. Based on the duality of environmental vulnerability and the omnipresence of numeric technology, the 3,500 square meter design focuses on the battle between mankind and nature.

The Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies is proud to announce the 2016 edition of The Geneva Challenge - Advancing Development Goals international Contest for graduate students. The Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA) in partnership with the City of San Francisco Planning Department is requesting creative proposals for submission in the 2016 Market Street Prototyping Festival. This is the second year we are inviting Bay Area citizens from all walks of culture, practice, and discipline to submit prototype ideas to make Market Street a more vibrant public space while also reflecting the uniqueness of San Francisco. This opportunity is not limited to artists and designers, so don’t be shy.

Port Royal and the Eastern Town sit within the Devon seaside town of Sidmouth with a population of 12,569. The competition site encompasses an area that has been much contested locally, with several local community groups having been involved with, or producing schemes for, alternative visions for this part of the town. It also includes a variety of stakeholders, and land in multiple ownership, including but not limited to Devon County Council, East Devon District Council, South West Water, and individual local landowners.

BUOYANCY AND LIFT (FLOATING CITIES)
In a world of climate change, refugees, and displaced peoples in crisis, Pamphlet Architecture asks for visions on the concept of BUOYANCY AND LIFT (FLOATING CITIES). Proposed solutions will provide housing, clinics, and other community services to 1,500 - 2,000 inhabitants with incremental additions while incorporating innovative technologies.

SADAR+VUGA, HHF architekten, and local consultant Archicon have received first prize in the competition for the adaptation and reconstruction of the Dom Revolucije (Home of Revolution) in Nikšić, Montenegro.

The existing structure, built by Slovenian architect Marko Mušič, was originally intended to represent the socio-political structure of Nikšić, Montenegro and Yugoslavia as a whole. Construction began on the building in 1978, and after eleven years, work was suspended, leaving the site uncompleted in the middle of the city for 27 years.

The new proposal will transform the Home of Revolution by utilizing the existing built structure—mainly a shell—and inserting minimal interventions to create a new type of urban space.

The aim of the Sleeping competition is to develop design proposals for the hotel typology – a place to sleep. It is asked to the participants to create innovative and unconventional projects on this theme, questioning the very basis of the notion of hotel. Recently many initiatives, such as Airbnb and Couch-surfing, have been proposing new interpretations of the function of hotels, developing extremely successful business models. With similar creative attitude the participants are urged to create an artefact, merging considerable programmatic innovation and valuable design tools. The proposal can be a device, a piece of furniture, an interior design project, a pavilion, a building or a urban plan. Scale of intervention, program dimensions and location are not given and they can be arranged by the participants to better suit their project.

The three winners of the Tokyo Pop Lab competition, which called for the development of an institution for popular culture, have been announced.

Centered on the phenomena of pop culture, the competition examined how “popular culture migrates and changes from person to person and place to place,” and invited entrants “to critically evaluate fundamental correlations between cultural production and architecture.”

Entrants varied in typology from pragmatic to ideological, with successful proposals including “a well considered and articulated definition of popular culture, clarity in representation of both architecture and culture, and a clear programmatic agenda.”

Bee Breeders has announced the winner of the Krakow Oxygen Home competition, which asked designers to reconsider contemporary architectural conventions with respect to current cultural and global issues in the city of Krakow, Poland. Due to the large number of coal-burning furnaces in the city, residents of Krakow are threatened by air pollution, which has resulted in a sky-rocketing number of cases of asthma, lung disease, and lung cancer. The competition brief called for the “design of a care center for lung cancer patients as part of the Maria Sklodowska-Curie Memorial Institute of Oncology.”

BSA Space, Boston’s only center for architecture and design, seeks curatorial proposals for its 2018—2019 exhibition season. The deadline to submit is Friday, April 15, 2016.

This project is part of a concerted effort to create a more vibrant and integrated urban environment on our main streets. Significant investment is being done to improve the streets and sidewalks and the City wishes to expand upon this work by implementing a façade improvement program. Dexter Street is an excellent example of a vibrant urban “Main Street,” with many successful businesses and delicious restaurants. The City believes that these façade improvements will have the opportunity to take the street “over the top” and pave the path toward a successful attraction for neighboring communities and tourists, in addition to improving the experience for residents.
