Showcasing the “best of healthcare building design and healthcare design-oriented research,” the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Academy of Architecture for Health (AAH) has unveiled the 2013 recipients of the AIA National Healthcare Design Awards program. Each project is said to exhibit conceptual strengths that solve aesthetic, civic, urban, and social concerns as well as the requisite functional and sustainability concerns of a hospital. Brigham and Women’s Hospital just broke ground last week on the Brigham Building for the Future, a 620,000 square-foot translational research and clinical facility designed by NBBJ. Located on the hospital’s Longwood campus, the 11-story project will house eight floors of research laboratories, three floors of clinics, a state-of-the-art imaging facility, social spaces, and a 400-car garage, along with associated site improvements. Rådgivergruppen USK, headed by C.F. Møller, Alectia and Rambøll, has been named as the winner of the competition to build the new Køge University Hospital, an expansion of the existing Køge Hospital, which will be increased threefold to a total area of 177,000 m². A visionary project in terms of both architecture and functionality, the hospital's various functions can be structured on a highly flexible basis, with good opportunities to support Region Zealand's vision of holistic patient care. Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects with Aarhus Arkitekterne, has just been announced as the winner of the competition to design the new extension of the New Hospital Hvidovre in Denmark. The new 30,000-square-meter extension consists of an emergency ward, a pediatrics ward and obstetrics and cardiology departments. Expected to be completed in 2019, clarity, flexibility, respect, green garden spaces and spatial variation are the key features to this winning design. Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects, in collaboration with Friis & Moltke, just won the competition to design the Ny Anstalt correctional facility in Nuuk, Greenland. The 8,000 square meter facility is the first such facility in Greenland, focusing on the contrast between beauty and roughness as a guiding theme for the project. This concept is also present in the choice of materials: concrete, wood and corten steel, which is rooted in a desire to adapt the complex to the landscape.
